Our top priority is teaching your child to read well and to enjoy reading.  We do this in many different ways.

  • We teach children the sounds that the different letters make (phonics) using the Letter and Sounds scheme.
  • We teach children to understand and appreciate reading through daily guided reading sessions.
  • We teach children to understand how writers structure their writing for maximum effect in literacy lessons.
  • We run catch up sessions for children who need a bit of extra help. Sometimes these happen during the school day and sometimes before school.
  • Reading at home is not optional, it is 'homework' and children who fail to do their homework will need to attend the lunchtime reading club in order to catch up.
  • We give children time each day to read on their own for enjoyment.

Letters and Sounds

At Reffley Academy, we teach reading through Letters and Sounds. Phonics.  Although reading is taught using synthetic phonics, the programme covers all of the new National Curriculum requirements for language and literacy.

The central element of the Letters and Sounds programme is the systematic teaching of all common sounds in the English language.  Children are taught to recognise the letters that represent the sounds, to put these sounds together (‘blend’) to read words and to separate words into sounds (‘segment’) to write.

Programme progression

In Nursery, children learn the first 30 sounds in short daily sessions.

In Reception all children:

  • ​Read storybooks and non-fiction books closely matched to their developing phonic knowledge.
  • Take home storybooks to share.
  • Read with fluency and expression.
  • Learn to spell using known sounds.
  • Write confidently by practising what they want to write out loud first.
  • Work well with a partner.
